Introduction

Note: These directions have been put in place to help customers with Mac OS X 10.5 pre-installed to configure Apple Mail.

Before You Begin

• Before you can configure Mail, you will need your email address, logtin.user name and your password. Please contact support if you don't laready have these.
• When the instructions below say "YourDomainName" replace with YourDomainName i.e. YourCompanyName.com or YourCompanyName.ca

Configure Apple Mail

1. Click the Mail icon in the Dock.
   Result: If you are launching Mail for the first time, it prompts you to set up an account. If you already have an account in Mail, and wish to add another account for your MIT email, open the Mail application and follow the menu path Mail > Preferences > Accounts, then click on the + (plus) sign in the lower-left corner.
2. Enter the following information:
   

   • The Full Name field contains the name from your Mac OS X user account settings; you may change it if you wish.
   • In the Email Address field, enter your email address (username@YourDomainName.com).
   • In the Password field, enter your password.
   • In the User Name & Password fields, enter your UserName/LoginName and Password

   Result: The Add Account window should look similar to the following:
   
   
3. Click Continue.
4. In the Incoming Mail Server window, enter the following configuration settings:

   • On the Account Type pop-up menu select POP3.
     
   • For Description enter YourDomainName.
   • For Incoming Mail Server, enter your server (smtp.YourDomainName.com).

   Mail automatically fills in the User Name and Password fields for you.
   Result: The Incoming Mail Server widow should look similar to the following:
   
5. Click Continue.
   If you've not installed the Netmatrix CA, Mail will ask you to verify the identity of the server.
6. In the Outgoing Mail Server window, enter the following configuration settings:

   • In the Description field, enter YourDomainName
   • For Outgoing Mail Server enter SMTP.YourDomainName.com.
   • Click the Use Authentication checkbox.

   Mail automatically fills in the User Name and Password fields for you.
   Result: The Incoming Mail Server widow should look similar to the following:
   
7. Click Continue.
   Result: Mail displays an Account Summary, which should look similar to the following. If Mail reports that it is checking connection to mail server "SMTP.YourDomainName.com" for more than 5 or 10 seconds, click Cancel and then click Continue again.
   We've reported this issue to Apple, and hope to have a fix soon.
   
8. Click Create.
   Result: Your account has been created.
9. In Mail, follow the menu path Mail > Preferences > Accounts.
10. In the list of accounts at the left, click to select your YOURDOMAIN POP3 account.
11. Delete any value saved in the Password field. The Accounts window should look similar to the following:
    
    
12. On the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) pop-up menu select Edit Server List.
    Result: The SMTP Server Options window opens.
13. In the list of servers, click to select the YourDomain outgoing mail server, and click Advanced.
    Result: The advanced settings for the YourDomain outgoing mail server are shown.
14. In the advanced settings window, enter the following configuration settings:

    • For Server Port enter 24.
    • Delete any value saved in the Password field.

    Mail correctly fills in the other fields for you.
    Result: The Outgoing Mail Server widow should look similar to the following:
    
    
    
    
15. Click OK.
16. Click Save.
17. Click Done.
    
    
18. Junk Mail Filtering should be turned off for now, so that e-mail imported from a program such as Eudora will not be marked as junk mail or spam.
    Click the Junk Mail icon at the top of the Preferences window.
19. Uncheck Enable Junk Mail filtering
    
    
    Result: The Junk Mail settings should look like the following:
    
20. Close the Preferences window by clicking the red button in the upper-left corner of the window.
21. Click Get Mail to retrieve new email.

Note: The first time you connect to the EMAIL server to retrieve your email, Mail will attempt to download all of your email and attachments from the server to your hard drive. If you have a large amount of email, or if you are on a slow Internet connection, it can take a long time for Mail to complete the download.
